A Mombasa-based Bongo singer from Meru has caused a huge stir online after changing his profile picture and replacing his own photo with the logo of mysterious secret society, Illuminati. Nassizu Murume, one of the fastest rising Bongo stars from Meru, whose latest song Siwezi has been on rotating across national TV and radio, made the shocking move on August 1st as the clearest indication of his association with the dreaded society. After making the profile change, hundreds of his fans have been shocked and bewildered by the mental state of the rousing crooner who has always presented a very clean, God-fearing image. And to accompany their shock, incensed Kenyans have poured out hundreds of bitter comments lashing out at the singer and blasting him for daring associate himself with the dark society. Illuminati is some new-age Internet-based phenomenon that is said to be a secret society that lures the rich and powerful – and also top celebrities – with a promise of incredible wealth, power and fame. Entertainers like Beyonce, Rihanna, Jay Z and Kanye West have all been linked to the mysterious occultist outfit. Is this Nassizu Murume’s boldest announcement of his allegiance to the satanic outfit? Or is some sort of crazed publicity stunt aimed at rousing up the masses?? We have contacted the singer but he is yet to respond to us.

Open Innovation Measurement - Part 3: Mass Customization

Research on mass customization has examined the value accrued by co-creation in a stage of the value chain very close to commercialization. The value increment of mass customized products was measured collecting data on consumers’ willingness to pay (Franke and Piller 2004; Schreier 2006; Franke et al. 2010). Users were found to be willing to pay a price premium of more than 100% for a self-designed watch on average (Franke and Piller 2004). Studies in the field of cell phones, t-shirts and scarves were able to confirm the value increment initially found (Schreier 2006; Franke et al. 2010). The value increment that could be realized by companies co-creating the product via an online configuration toolkit was explained by four user benefits. In terms of the mass customized product users profit from a product better tailored to their needs, i.e. a functional benefit and the product’s uniqueness to express their individuality (perceived uniqueness). The other two benefits are positioned in the experience domain of co-creation. Users derive hedonic value-in-use as proposed in the service-dominant logic literature from a ‘flow’ experience (Csikszentmihalyi 1990; Csikszentmihalyi 2002) and rewarding activity itself when configuring the product themselves (Schreier 2006). The co-created product also has additional value increased by the ‘pride of authorship’ effect, i.e. the favorable effect resulting from having created something by oneself. Due to the fact that value is co-created in the phase right before commercialization, i.e. no more (or at least few) subsequent steps in the value chain before consumption, experiments allow researchers to rather precisely assess the extra value created through the interface between customer and production. Similiar to brand measurement, the construct of the price premium paid is applied to capture the value co-created in a mass customization environment.

As the elections hit the homestretch, and every politician is out there trying to scoop up as much votes as is humanly possible, wizards of all nature have also cropped up with amazing inventions to keep the public abreast with the hype. And even though Kenya is till very far from the Silicon Valley, which is the home of all advanced technology, we have our own brilliant minds at home who have decided to let their brilliance shine through the murky national politics. A mobile app named Uhuruto has already been developed and created and it’s already catching fire fast as supporters of the Jubilee Party download it in troves to keep up with the blitz. Simple and very straightforward, the App includes several sections among them a section that highlights the Jubilee Government’s successes so far, their promises for the next term, the Uhuruto journey to power, their bios and even a chat section where supporters can chat online and have an animated conversation around their preferred leaders. The App is already up on Google Play Store and it’s promising to be one of the most downloaded Apps in the next few weeks as the elections heat up. Aside from the madness, the hate, the bile and the tribalism that has turned our social media into a warzone, at least some gentleman has come up with something brilliant from all the scrum… And without having to resort to infantile outbursts against the opponents online. This Rapper has decided to Bring back the Original Kenyan Pop Sound…And it’s Fresh (VIDEO)

At 27 years of age, Jiggy Rush seems to be in a rush to stop all the foreign sounds he’s hearing on local radio and to inject a fresh vibe that’s actually cut from the past – the original Kapuka flow. During the height of the Ogopa Deejays’ dominance of the local industry, that stretched across the entire early 2000s, one sound was the fore – the sound of Kapuka, heavily popularized by the late E-Sir, The Kleptomaniac crew, Nameless and Mr Lenny. But with time, the sound faded off paving way to the braggadocio type of rap pioneered by Prezzo and later perfected by the likes of Octopizzo and Khaligraph Jones. “I felt that we need to take our sound back…and refresh the original Kenyan vibe, Kenyan sound as opposed to this Western-style rubbish flooding our airwaves,” the Grandpa Records affiliate says. Starting off at Calif Records, where he recorded with a group that later fell apart, Jiggy Rush found a new home at Grandpa Records where he did the single Huku that has brought back vivid Kapuka-era memories. In a style reminiscent of pioneer rappers from South C, Jiggy Rush has come to pump back the original vibe in an industry saturated with same-sounding Trap mumblings. And for a man who also dabbles as a graffiti artist on matatus and walls across Nairobi, this is one hell of a knock out jam. Check it out;
