Vitamin Supplements

by @ Bradley's Pharmacy: Latest News

Hello again everyone,

On this installment of our pharmacist blog we are looking into Vitamin supplements, which you need & what benefits you will get back from taking them.

Normally a well balanced diet consisting of variety of healthy foods should provide you with all the nutrients you need. However, taking supplements can provide additional nutrients when your diet is lacking, or when certain health conditions cause you to develop an insufficiency or deficiency.

In most cases, multivitamin supplements provide all the basic micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) your body needs. These multivitamins are generally safe because they contain only small amounts of each nutrient. The most popular nutritional supplements are calcium and vitamins B, C and D. Popular multivitamin brands include Centrum, Berocca and Pharmaton.

Scientific evidence shows that some dietary supplements are beneficial for overall health and for managing some health conditions. For example, calcium and vitamin D are important for keeping bones strong and reducing bone loss; folic acid decreases the risk of certain birth defects; and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils might help some people with heart disease.

Women need iron during pregnancy, and breastfed infants need vitamin D. Folic acid 400 micrograms daily, whether from supplements or fortified food is important for all women of childbearing age.

Vitamin B12 keeps nerve and blood cells healthy. Vitamin B12 mostly comes from meat, fish and dairy foods, so vegans may consider taking a supplement to be sure to get enough of it.

Research suggests that fish oil can promote heart health.

Benefits of taking dietary supplements:

  • Taking multivitamin supplements can improve physical and mental health, prevent vitamin deficiency that can cause illnesses, and reduce stress.
  • Aids in tissue maintenance and repair - by taking Calcium and vitamin D supplements, they help prevent bone diseases such as osteoporosis, as their role is to keep bones strong.
  • Vitamin D fights infections including colds and the flu, could help prevent autoimmune diseases such as MS, and also helps guard against cardiovascular disease, and boosts the immune system.
  • Vitamin A is essential for normal vision, reproduction, growth and immune function.
  • Vitamin C and vitamin E supplements improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia.
  • Generous intake of B vitamins may reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.
  • Mineral supplements help elevate energy and activity levels, and support growth and maintenance of hard and soft tissue.
  • Zinc is essential for growth and development. Zinc supplements can contribute to healthier pregnancies and improved immune function, improve performance and strength, and boost brain function.
  • Iron acts as a carrier of oxygen, regulates body temperature, vital for muscle function, prevents anaemia, keeps you energetic, and provides strength to the immune system.
  • Magnesium is essential in the body. Helps keep bones strong, muscles relaxed, blood pressure normal and heart rhythm steady, allows nerves to send messages to the brain, regulates the metabolism of nutrients and regulates cholesterol production.

Back To School

by @ Bradley's Pharmacy: Latest News

As we come into August, we have to start thinking about the kids going back to school. Many parents will celebrate the start of September and many others will be busy preparing for what the new school year might bring. But the transition remains far from painless.

Here are some tips to get back to school with a healthy start.

We’ve heard those who fail to plan should plan to fail. Preparing for school is no different. Somehow that first day of school sneaks up on us, leaving us weary and smacking that snooze button. Getting a healthy dose of sleep each night before they’re back to school offers all a chance to get a healthy start. Ideally, start weaning them from late-night activities two weeks before the back to school date. Back up bedtime by 15- 20 minutes each night so that by the time school starts, they’ll be plenty tired for some good shut eye.

Healthy Routine

Kids thrive on routine; it reduces stress and anxiety. But the key word here is healthy. Plenty of kids acquire unhealthy routines, such as spending endless hours glued to a screen in lieu of exercise and getting outside. Try to get your kids out exercising; have a regular bedtime and reduce the amount of time that they have access to TV and handheld devices.

Healthy Diet

Smart food choices affect day-to-day functioning at school. It is no surprise then that students who are bored, restless, inattentive and sleepy or who have a bad memory are usually those who have poor eating habits. By choosing the right brain food, students can perform at their best.

For brainy solutions, choose foods that are rich in the following:

Vitamin B

  • Vitamin B remains crucial to concentration and memory.
  • Vitamin B can help reduce tiredness and fatigue.
  • Vitamin B can be found in whole-grain cereals, leafy green vegetables, dairy, eggs, meat, fish and fruits.

Omega-3 fatty acids

  • There is evidence that Omega-3 fatty acids supports cognitive health and brain function.
  • They can be found in cold-water fish such as salmon and mackerel, walnuts, flaxseed, canola oil, certain margarines, fortified dairy products and fortified eggs.

With a broad, balanced diet, it's possible for your child to get all the nutrients they need. However, the majority of children (and adults) do not get the well balanced diet they could. This could be down to a number of factors, such as bad habits, taste preferences, reluctance to try new foods, budget restrictions or time constraints.

These days there are a huge number of children's supplements available, containing a wide range of vitamins, minerals, fish oils, fibre and much more.

To help prevent busy, active children from becoming very fatigued, or after a period of illness Pharmaton Kiddi Health provides an excellent range of quality ingredients. It has a good levels of the B vitamins, which are important for the correct functioning of the nervous system. All the other key vitamins and minerals you would expect, such as Iron and Folic Acid are also included. Pharmaton Kiddi also contains Calcium, Phosphorous and the amino acid Lysine to help support healthy growth.

As well as the B vitamins we mentioned above, it's important that we get an intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are great for growing minds and have been shown to help improve concentration levels if taken for a period of six months. Haliborange softies omega-3 & multivitamins are a perfect alternative for school kids that don't like to eat salmon, mackerel or other oily fish.

Limiting the amount of high sugar products in lunch boxes can help limit a post lunch crash when blood sugar levels drop again, which can negatively affect concentration and mood.

An organised space clears a disorganised mind! Help your child plan how to best use their book bag, desk space and papers.

Good Hygiene

Sniffles and snotty noses run rampant in schools and can bring on colds and flus that hamper learning and fun. Four in five infectious diseases, such as stomach bugs, are spread by hands. Teach kids to wash hands after using the restroom, before eating and when coming home. A little bit of soap and friction will go a long way.

Listening to your child–whether it be about a teacher, a report, a peer or a problem–will go a long way towards building a strong bond and a sense of trust. Listening keys you in to your child’s experiences and can only help you better understand their needs and desires. Most importantly, listen for successes and celebrate!

Winter drags many of us down, it sucks up our energy, causes joint inflammation and pain, leaves us with the sniffles, seasonal flu, and the cold.

However, many of these common winter ailments are caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies. That’s why topping up your stores with the following twelve essential vitamins and minerals can put a spring back in your winter step…

Vitamin C

You always pop vitamin C when you feel a cold coming on. However, during winter when vegetables and fruits high in the immune boosting vitamin are scarce, you may need to take regular vitamin C supplements to support body tissue growth, healthy blood vessels, strong bones and teeth, and to ward off influenza.

Vitamin C can reduce the length and severity of symptoms. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant. This means it protects the body against disease including heart disease and cancer. It is vital for the production of collagen, used to build body tissue and bones.

A body that’s low in iron can really feel really sluggish come winter. Iron is essential for the formation of red blood cells which carries oxygen around the body. A good intake of iron is necessary for energy, intellectual performance and vitality. A lack of iron leads to anaemia - where the body is unable to transport oxygen around the body causing lethargy and listlessness. A daily dose of iron should help you stay away from excess caffeine, and help keep you going to the gym or maintaining your workout

Vitamin A

If you’re already iron deficient, chances are your vitamin A stores are depleted as well. Unless you’re pregnant, vitamin A will put the sparkle back in your eyes, the glow back in dull winter skin, and keep your bones strong in case of a slip or fall in nasty winter conditions.Vitamin A is important for repairing tissues needed for growth and development. It is also essential for strengthening the immune system.

Calcium is an essential mineral, it supports strong bones and teeth.

Vitamin D

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, it seems that we hardly see any sunshine during winter. This can be bad news for the D deficient since this essential vitamin is only absorbed when the body is exposed to sunlight. That’s why getting out in the sun (when weather permits) is vital during colder, darker months. Without vitamin D, the body can’t absorb calcium or stimulate certain immune responses that protect us from colds and infections.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Winter’s short, dark days combined with bone-chilling temperatures can cause seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Luckily, omega-3 fatty acid supplements can help boost your mood, improve your mental focus, and ward off the sniffles.

Vitamin E

If you suffer from seasonal dry skin, nails, and hair then you might be seriously lacking in vitamin E. This moisturising antioxidant infuses the skin with moisture and soothes, red, itchy, flaky skin and brittle hair and nails against free radical damage, windburn, psoriasis, and dandruff.Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant protecting cell membranes from damage, and is thought to protect against some cancers and heart disease

Folic Acid

Unfortunately, if you’re not a fan of green, leafy vegetables, you’re probably not getting enough folic acid. And during winter months when spinach and arugula are at an all time low, it’s even more difficult to top up depleting stores, which result in dry, flaky skin during cold months when we take more hot baths and showers, and when the humidity is low and skin won’t retain sufficient moisture.

B Vitamins

This energetic little group of vitamins, known as B Complex, are responsible for converting carbohydrates into energy, to help metabolize fats and proteins for fuel. That’s why supplementing with B’s (particularly vitamin B12) can lessen feelings of depression, anxiety, and SAD.

Many women suffer from painful menstrual cramps, particularly during winter. However, adding a magnesium supplement to your daily diet can ease cramps during cold weather months by lessening muscle contractions and severe nerve impulses.

An essential mineral that makes up part of the enzymes that defend the body against damage. As an antioxidant it strengthens the immune system and is thought to protect against cancer, especially of the prostate

Zinc can help shorten the length of a cold by one day when taken during the first few days. It is also noted that when taken over an extended period, it may also be effective at reducing the number of colds each year.

Yokebe Active Food

Yokebe Active Food is a special combination of high-quality proteins, honey and all your essential vitamins, minerals and macronutrients. Yokebe is a highly nutritious and will help with weight loss.

Yokebe has:

  • No artificial flavours or preservatives

  • GMO free
  • Natural honey

The untreated natural honey is a healthy alternative and contains valuable minerals and enzymes, adding to the benefits of your shake. Last but not least, it provides natural flavouring and giving the natural Yokebe taste.

    High Quality Proteins

The high-quality soy and whey proteins in Yokebe play a significant role: The high-quality proteins support muscle mass and the Yokebe nutrient combination ensures the Yokebe triple weight loss effect.

    Carefully selected vitamins & minerals

The B5 and B12 vitamins in Yokebe promote normal energy metabolism, and vitamin B6 promotes normal protein and glycogen metabolism.

    The Importance of Vitamin D

by @ Bradley's Pharmacy: Latest News

    Vitamin D deficiency is

    common among the Irish

In what is considered the largest representative study of vitamin D status of older Irish adults, scientists have found widespread vitamin D deficiency among those aged 50 and older.

If you are Irish and older than 50, you stand a fair chance of being deficient in vitamin D, a nutrient that is essential for your bone metabolism, muscle strength, and immune system, among other things. Researchers from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College Dublin have shown in a first-of-its-kind trial that, during the summer period, one in eight older Irish person has blood levels of vitamin D below 30 nmol/L. This is viewed as the threshold to deficiency. In the winter period, the deficiency rate increases to one in four in the same age group.

    More common in smokers

The new study, which was recently published in the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Science, looked at vitamin D status and took into account such factors as age, economic status, and lifestyle factors. The researchers could see that vitamin D deficiency increased with age and that it was more common in smokers, people who live alone, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

    Applies to many other countries

Based on their observations, the scientists state that the results of their study are of relevance not only to the Irish population but literally all countries that have seasonal sunlight variations. In fact, earlier studies across Europe revealed vitamin D deficiency problems, surprisingly even in countries such as Italy, Portugal and Hungary where sunshine is much more abundant.

Is there a need for supplements?

Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight. We also get a certain amount of the nutrient from foods such as oily fish, egg yolks, and mushrooms. More and more people take vitamin D supplements as a way of ensuring adequate intake levels of the nutrient. A preparation like BioActive D-Pearls from Pharma Nord, which contains vitamin D3 in dissolved in an olive oil formula, appears to be a good choice. So far, two scientific studies have demonstrated that this specific preparation provides excellent bioavailability.

    Colds and Flu

by @ Bradley's Pharmacy: Latest News

Colds and flu are among the most frequently dealt with complaints in the pharmacy. There is no cure for a cold or flu as they are caused by viruses. But their symptoms can be dealt with by over the counter remedies.

People commonly confuse the cold with being the flu, but there are differences. A list of symptoms associated with both viruses are listed below.

The first symptom of a cold is usually a sore or irritated throat.

This is then followed by symptoms that include:

    - Nasal congestion

    - Nasal pain and irritation

    - Sneezing

    - Nasal discharge (a runny nose): the discharge is usually clear and runny at first before becoming thicker and darker over the course of the infection

    - Coughing: this symptom occurs in one out of every three cases

    - Hoarse voice

    - A general sense of feeling unwell

Less common symptoms of a cold include:

    - High temperature (fever): this is usually mild with a temperature of around 38-39C (100.4-102.2F)

    - Headache

    - Muscle pain

    - Loss of taste and smell

    - Mild irritation of your eyes

    - A feeling of pressure in your ears and face

The symptoms of a cold usually peak in severity during the first two to three days of the infection before gradually starting to improve. The symptoms in adults and older children will usually last for about a week. However, it may last for up to three weeks.

Colds tend to last longer in younger children who are five years of age or younger with their symptoms typically lasting between 10-14 days.

A visit to your GP is usually only necessary if:

-Your symptoms persist for more than 14 days

    - You cough up blood-stained phlegm (thick mucus)

    - You experience chest pain

    - You experience breathing difficulties

    - You experience severe swelling of your lymph nodes (glands) in your neck and/or armpits

    Symptoms of the flu include:

    - Sudden fever of 38-40C (100-104F)

    - Muscle aches and pains

    - Sweating

    - Feeling exhausted and needing to lie down

    - A dry, chesty cough

A person with flu may also have a runny nose and be prone to sneezing, but these are not usually the defining symptoms of flu.

Flu symptoms appear one to three days after infection and most people recover within a week, although you may feel tired for longer.

At Bradley's Pharmacy we can offer you the flu jab. You may even be eligible to receive it for free under certain circumstances.

Whether it’s a cold or flu, get medical help if you either:

    - Have a chronic condition

    - Have a very high fever as well as an unusually severe headache or abdominal or chest pain

People who are run down or whose immune system isn't working well, are more likely to get colds. You can help improve these defenses by looking after yourself with healthy eating and getting plenty of sleep.

The use of antibiotics to treat a cold or flu are not recommended. As almost all cases are caused by a viral infection, antibiotics will not have any benefit.

Many OTC medications contain a combination of different medicines; typically a painkiller, such as paracetamol and a decongestant, such as pseudo-ephedrine.

All these products can be bought in your local Bradley's Pharmacy.

    Cough bottles

There are many two different types of cough medication, i.e. Expectorants and cough suppressants.

Expectorants help bring phlegm up so that coughing is easier. While cough suppressants hold back the cough reflex. Expectorants are usually used for a chesty cough while cough suppressants are used for dry coughs.

Examples of expectorants include Benylin traditional cough medicine and Exputex.

Cough suppressants include Benylin dry cough syrup.

Decongestants can be taken by mouth (oral decongestants) or they can be taken as a spray in your nose (nasal decongestants). They work by reducing the swelling in the passageways of your nose and they may also help to ease breathing.

Examples include Sudafed, Actifed (oral decongestants), Otrivine nasal spray and Vicks Sinex Micromist (nasal decongestants).

Nasal decongestants should not be used for more than five to seven days because using them for longer than this can actually make your congestion worse.

    Sore throat remedies

Lozenges act as anesthetic to quickly numb the pain associated with a sore throat. They also help lubricate and soothe the area. Strepsils do a full range.

There is sprays also available to help numb the throat, examples include Difflam.

Paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin can help to reduce a fever, and they also act as painkillers.

Paracetamol, ibuprofen, and aspirin are also included in some OTC cold medicines with other ingredients. E.g. Lemsip, Nurofen cold and flu, Benylin 4 Flu, Uniflu, Ilvico, Advil Cold and Flu.

    Zinc supplements

Taking zinc syrup, tablets or lozenges may be an effective treatment for the common cold. Zinc supplements have been shown to reduce the duration and severity.
