Hello again everyone,
On this installment of our pharmacist blog we are looking into Vitamin supplements, which you need & what benefits you will get back from taking them.
Normally a well balanced diet consisting of variety of healthy foods should provide you with all the nutrients you need. However, taking supplements can provide additional nutrients when your diet is lacking, or when certain health conditions cause you to develop an insufficiency or deficiency.
In most cases, multivitamin supplements provide all the basic micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) your body needs. As we come into August, we have to start thinking about the kids going back to school. Many parents will celebrate the start of September and many others will be busy preparing for what the new school year might bring. But the transition remains far from painless.
Here are some tips to get back to school with a healthy start.
We’ve heard those who fail to plan should plan to fail. Preparing for school is no different. Somehow that first day of school sneaks up on us, leaving us weary and smacking that snooze button. Getting a healthy dose of sleep each night before they’re back to school offers all a chance to get a healthy start. Ideally, start weaning them from late-night activities two weeks before the back to school date. Vitamin D deficiency is
common among the Irish
In what is considered the largest representative study of vitamin D status of older Irish adults, scientists have found widespread vitamin D deficiency among those aged 50 and older.
If you are Irish and older than 50, you stand a fair chance of being deficient in vitamin D, a nutrient that is essential for your bone metabolism, muscle strength, and immune system, among other things. Researchers from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College Dublin have shown in a first-of-its-kind trial that, during the summer period, one in eight older Irish person has blood levels of vitamin D below 30 nmol/L. This is viewed as the threshold to deficiency. In the winter period, the deficiency rate increases to one in four in the same age group.
More common in smokers
The new study, which was recently published in the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Science, looked at vitamin D status and took into account such factors as age, economic status, and lifestyle factors. The researchers could see that vitamin D deficiency increased with age and that it was more common in smokers, people who live alone, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Applies to many other countries
Based on their observations, the scientists state that the results of their study are of relevance not only to the Irish population but literally all countries that have seasonal sunlight variations. In fact, earlier studies across Europe revealed vitamin D deficiency problems, surprisingly even in countries such as Italy, Portugal and Hungary where sunshine is much more abundant.
Is there a need for supplements?
Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight. We also get a certain amount of the nutrient from foods such as oily fish, egg yolks, and mushrooms. More and more people take vitamin D supplements as a way of ensuring adequate intake levels of the nutrient. Colds and flu are among the most frequently dealt with complaints in the pharmacy. There is no cure for a cold or flu as they are caused by viruses. But their symptoms can be dealt with by over the counter remedies.
People commonly confuse the cold with being the flu, but there are differences. A list of symptoms associated with both viruses are listed below.
The first symptom of a cold is usually a sore or irritated throat.
This is then followed by symptoms that include:
- Nasal congestion
- Nasal pain and irritation
- Nasal discharge (a runny nose): the discharge is usually clear and runny at first before becoming thicker and darker over the course of the infection
- Coughing: this symptom occurs in one out of every three cases
- Hoarse voice
- A general sense of feeling unwell
Less common symptoms of a cold include:
- High temperature (fever): this is usually mild with a temperature of around 38-39C (100.4-102.2F)
- Muscle pain
- Loss of taste and smell
- Mild irritation of your eyes
- A feeling of pressure in your ears and face
The symptoms of a cold usually peak in severity during the first two to three days of the infection before gradually starting to improve. The symptoms in adults and older children will usually last for about a week. However, it may last for up to three weeks.
Colds tend to last longer in younger children who are five years of age or younger with their symptoms typically lasting between 10-14 days.
A visit to your GP is usually only necessary if:
-Your symptoms persist for more than 14 days
- You cough up blood-stained phlegm (thick mucus)
- You experience chest pain
- You experience breathing difficulties
- You experience severe swelling of your lymph nodes (glands) in your neck and/or armpits
Symptoms of the flu include:
- Sudden fever of 38-40C (100-104F)
- Muscle aches and pains
- Feeling exhausted and needing to lie down
- A dry, chesty cough
A person with flu may also have a runny nose and be prone to sneezing, but these are not usually the defining symptoms of flu.
Flu symptoms appear one to three days after infection and most people recover within a week, although you may feel tired for longer.

Whether it’s a cold or flu, get medical help if you either:
- Have a chronic condition
- Have a very high fever as well as an unusually severe headache or abdominal or chest pain
People who are run down or whose immune system isn't working well, are more likely to get colds. You can help improve these defenses by looking after yourself with healthy eating and getting plenty of sleep.
The use of antibiotics to treat a cold or flu are not recommended. As almost all cases are caused by a viral infection, antibiotics will not have any benefit.
Many OTC medications contain a combination of different medicines; typically a painkiller, such as paracetamol and a decongestant, such as pseudo-ephedrine.

There are many two different types of cough medication, i.e. Expectorants and cough suppressants.
Expectorants help bring phlegm up so that coughing is easier. While cough suppressants hold back the cough reflex. Expectorants are usually used for a chesty cough while cough suppressants are used for dry coughs.
Examples of expectorants include Benylin traditional cough medicine and Exputex.
Cough suppressants include Benylin dry cough syrup.
Decongestants can be taken by mouth (oral decongestants) or they can be taken as a spray in your nose (nasal decongestants). They work by reducing the swelling in the passageways of your nose and they may also help to ease breathing.
Examples include Sudafed, Actifed (oral decongestants), Otrivine nasal spray and Vicks Sinex Micromist (nasal decongestants).
Nasal decongestants should not be used for more than five to seven days because using them for longer than this can actually make your congestion worse.
Sore throat remedies
Lozenges act as anesthetic to quickly numb the pain associated with a sore throat. They also help lubricate and soothe the area. Strepsils do a full range.
There is sprays also available to help numb the throat, examples include Difflam.
Paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin can help to reduce a fever, and they also act as painkillers.
Paracetamol, ibuprofen, and aspirin are also included in some OTC cold medicines with other ingredients. E.g. Lemsip, Nurofen cold and flu, Benylin 4 Flu, Uniflu, Ilvico, Advil Cold and Flu.
Taking zinc syrup, tablets or lozenges may be an effective treatment for the common cold. Zinc supplements have been shown to reduce the duration and severity.
