Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal Start Charity Campaign for Mexican Earthquake Victims

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal Start Charity Campaign for Mexican Earthquake Victims

by Mike Miller @

Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are asking for support on behalf of their native Mexico following the devastating 7.1 earthquake that rocked their homeland on Tuesday.

The natural disaster, which occurred on the anniversary of the country’s 1985 earthquake that killed 10,000 people, tore down homes, apartments and businesses and claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

Now, the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star and Mozart in the Jungle Golden Globe-winner are teaming up to help garner more international support for the victims of the earthquake.

“For those of you asking how you can help Mexico, we’ve created a grassroots platform for raising funds that we will make sure go to helping those who need it most,” Luna wrote on Instagram, while encouraging people to check out the links on his bio.

The duo also created a video (above) to help spread the word. “As of recent reports, 273 people have died, more than 100 peopel are still missing. They’re estimating that 100,000’s of people have lost everything,” Luna says.

While Bernal notes that Mexicans have responded to the disaster with “inspiring and powerful solidarity,” Luna adds, “we still need help from those of you seeing this disaster from afar. We still need you.”

Their grassroots campaign is running through Omaze, which allows them to collect money internationally. They’re also “joining forces with Ambulante to raise urgently needed funds to rebuild hospitals, schools and homes that have been severely affected by this disaster,” according to their website.

“Ambulante is a grassroots organization which has organized community programs all over Mexico for the past 12 years. Ambulante will receive and distribute 100 percent of the funds directly to local organizations and social initiatives dedicated to helping those most affected by this catastrophe,” the website adds.

Luna, who has been posting to Instagram from on the ground in Mexico City, released a second video on Friday, showing the destruction in his city and once again urged people to contribute to his campaign.

Woman Gives Birth in the Middle of the Street During Earthquake in Mexico: ‘It Was a Miracle’

Woman Gives Birth in the Middle of the Street During Earthquake in Mexico: ‘It Was a Miracle’

by Jason Duaine Hahn @

When the deadly 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City on September 19, a young mother was rushed from a hospital and out onto a street corner to give birth to her baby boy amidst the chaos that was unfolding.

Jessica Mendoza was preparing to give birth at Sanatorio Durango hospital when the earthquake struck the Mexico City area. Though Mendoza was already six centimeters dilated, her team of doctors and nurses carried her from the shaking medical center and to the street to join others who were escaping their crumbling buildings.

The team was able to collect tarp sheets from local police officers and laid them on a nearby park bench, where they continued the birth without anesthesia.

“Despite everything happening around me I carried on with the birth,” Mendoza told EL PAÍS, according to the New York Times. “I completely isolated myself. I didn’t hear a thing. I just remember that there was my doctor, the nurses, my husband and my mother. They made their way through the chaos in order to find a safe space.”

An hour after the earthquake passed, officials from the hospital announced the building was safe to re-enter, and Mendoza and her husband, Amado Ortiz, went back inside. This time, they had a new member of the family: their child, Adolfo Iñaki.

“The world was falling around us and he came to save ours. It’s the greatest message of love and example of strength and bravery for the world,” Ortiz told the newspaper.

The uniqueness of the birth was not lost on Mendoza.

“It was a miracle,” she said, praising her medical team led by Dr. Elisabeth Valencia.

Little Adolfo’s birth brings a shred of optimism to a situation that has been dire for thousands of victims. The earthquake has caused more than 200 deaths in the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. About 30 children were killed after their school was destroyed, and in another instance, 11 members of a single family were killed when their church collapsed on them during the seismic event.

But it’s not too late to help Mexico rebuild—there are a few ways you can assist in efforts to rescue and aid victims of the earthquake, such as by donating monetary funds, volunteering or using social media to spread information on people still missing since Tuesday.

Newly published body-camera footage shows the moment Texas authorities informed a 48-year-old veterinarian and her boyfriend that her ex-husband had been killed — an announcement that apparently left them stunned, though investigators allege their reaction was staged, as they were the suspects in a murder-for-hire plot which was never actually completed.

The strange investigation, which ended in the arrests of Valerie McDaniel and Leon Jacob earlier this year, will be featured on Friday night’s episode of ABC News’ 20/20.

In the body-camera footage, which will air during the episode, McDaniel is seen looking moved by the news that her ex-husband had been killed in what authorities told her appeared to be a robbery gone wrong.

Jacob, who was at her condo in Houston, was also there to learn about the “death.”

“Oh my God,” he says, according to the body-camera video “We have been here all night. We were here all day with their daughter and we were watching movies. I never met him except for once.”

But authorities don’t buy it.

“What he wants to do is establish an alibi and let us know right away it is not him,” retired Houston detective Frank Quinn tells 20/20 in the clip. “And then feigns that surprise. It was all rehearsed in my opinion.”

The couple was arrested in March and charged with solicitation of capital murder. McDaniel, who was released on 55,000 bail, jumped to her death from the seventh floor of a high-rise building just one day before she was scheduled to appear in court.

Jacob, who remains in Harris County Jail in Texas pending trial, was interviewed by 20/20 and proclaimed his innocence. He has pleaded not guilty.

“I am innocent of these charges. I still maintain that throughout,” he told ABC News. “I find them to be atrocious in manner because I’m not some monster that wanted my ex-girlfriend killed and her ex-husband … I’m a healer by nature.”

McDaniel reportedly met Jacob after a contentious custody battle over her daughter with her husband of 17 years. Jacob was a medical school graduate who was allegedly kicked out of more than one residency program, including one where a hospital found him to be an “ immediate threat to patient safety,” according to ABC News.

He had also been arrested and charged him with stalking a previous girlfriend — the second target in the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

McDaniel and Jacob reportedly spent about two months dating before police allege they planned to get rid of their exes.

Authorities previously told PEOPLE that the couple allegedly met with a hitman at an Olive Garden in Houston. The plan was to kill McDaniel’s ex-husband in a car-jacking gone awry while Jacob’s ex-girlfriend would be kidnapped and then killed, according to prosecutors.

However, there was only one problem: The man they were meeting was actually an undercover police officer.

“The whole thing is bizarre,” said prosecutor Tom Berg, first assistant at the Harris County Assistant District Attorney Office.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

Berg said the alleged murder-for-hire plan first came to light on Feb. 23, after investigators with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office were tipped off that Jacob was allegedly trying to have his ex-girlfriend killed in order to prevent her from testifying against him in his pending felony stalking case.

A friend of McDaniel’s told ABC News she believes it was Jacob’s influence that drew her into allegedly helping plan the killings.

“It’s something that happened to her. I truly believe that,” the friend said. “This was not something that she would’ve ever done.”

Friday’s episode of 20/20 also features audio that McDaniel made after she was arrested and shortly before she took her own life as well as an interview with Michael Kubosh, the man who alerted authorities to his suspicions about Jacob.

“I was completely turned off immediately by his attitude,” McDaniel said in one entry, of meeting Jacob.

“I was drawn to him but disgusted at the same time,” she said.

20/20 airs Friday (10 p.m. ET) on ABC.

10 Friends Episodes That Would Never Happen If the Show Premiered Today

10 Friends Episodes That Would Never Happen If the Show Premiered Today

by Diana Pearl @

Thirteen years after Friends‘ original debut — on Sept. 22, 1994 — the show still holds up — but some of its storylines haven’t quite stood the test of time. Here are ten examples.

1. Monica recording over Richard’s voicemail greeting on “The One Where No One’s Ready”

Monica, wallowing and obsessing over her breakup with Richard, calls into his voicemail to play the gang a message she left for him in a weak moment. She then hears a message a woman left for him, continues to freak out, deletes it, and then calls him back to leave an apology for invading his privacy in the first place. But instead of leaving a voicemail, she tapes over his outgoing message. Meaning that anyone who gets his answering machine hears Monica talking about getting her period and hacking into her ex’s voicemail.

In 2017, you don’t call your voicemail from another person’s phone. And no one really leaves voicemails anymore either way. Instead, she’d probably send a few ill-advised texts, though she’d never realize that another woman (who actually happens to be his daughter) is communicating with him.

2. Joey and Chandler freaking out over free porn on “The One With the Free Porn”

When Joey and Chandler change the channel, stumbling on free porn, they’re so excited that it’s (literally) all they watch for days, worrying that if they turn off the channel, the free porn will disappear.

It’s 2017. We have the internet. There is no lack of free porn in the world.

3. Rachel misses her flight to Vail because it’s locked inside their apartment in “The One Where Underdog Gets Away”

Her paper plane ticket, which cannot be reprinted, is locked inside her and Monica’s apartment after they head up to their roof (also, their already dreamy apartment has roof access?!) to see the escaped Underdog float from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade make its way across the city.

Today, Rachel could just head to the airport and get her ticket reprinted at a kiosk. Or even more likely, she’d already have it on her phone, which she would never let of her sight — let alone locked in an apartment.

4. Janice walking Chandler to his gate in Yemen in “The One With All the Rugby”

Unless Janice also has a ticket to Yemen, she’s not getting past security. Really, the entire making-up-a-move-to-Yemen plot couldn’t have happened in 2017. Janice would have obviously looked up 15 Yemen Road, Yemen, on Google Maps, seen that the address doesn’t exist, and have foiled Chandler’s not-so-well-thought-out plan.

5. Rachel taking Emily’s ticket on the trip to Greece in “The One After Ross Says Rachel”

When Emily is (rightfully) furious with Ross after he says Rachel’s name at the altar, it seems as though she’s going to skip out on their Grecian honeymoon. So, Ross invites Rachel to come with him — as friends. Emily then arrives at the airport, sees that Rachel is taking her place on the honeymoon

None of this could happen today. (In fact, could really have happened then?) You can’t change the name on a plane ticket without paying a hefty fee, and two people can’t get through security with the same ticket — so how did both Rachel and Emily get to the gate? The whole scenario is utterly impossible today.

7. Getting stranded on the way to their ski trip in “The One Without the Ski Trip”

The group — sans Ross, who is still on the outs with Rachel after their breakup — takes Phoebe’s cab to her sister’s cabin for a ski trip. But when the cab runs out of gas, they have to call Ross to come bring them more. And then after they leave, his car battery dies.

Ross’s car battery wouldn’t die in 2017 because he wouldn’t have had to come bail the friends out of their gas-less pickle. They would have just called AAA on their cell phones, and the whole thing would have come to an anti-climatic ending.

8. Ursula posing as Phoebe in porn videos in “The One Where Chandler Can’t Cry”

Phoebe found out that her twin sister was using her name to work as a porn star when she saw the gang watching one of Ursula’s (many) videos after someone told them about the videos at the coffee shop.

Ursula wouldn’t have been able to get very fair with the same scheme in 2017. One quick Google search would have alerted Phoebe to the problem, so she could have solved it much earlier — or at least, collected a few more of Ursula’s porn paychecks.

9. Rachel wouldn’t leave Ross a drunk voicemail in “The One Where Ross Finds Out”

See #1. People don’t really leave voicemails anymore. And the drunk method of communication of choice for 99% of people is text. It only makes sense that Rachel would have told Ross that she’s “so over” him and “that’s called closure” over text, not in a slurred voice message.

Though we would miss the dramatic phone-in-the-ice-bucket finish.

10. There would be no Chloe from the copy place in “The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break”

One of the show’s biggest moments comes in the third season when Ross sleeps with Chloe, who works at the nearby copy place, while he and Rachel are “on a break” — though whether that break allowed for sleeping with other people remains unclear.

But Ross wouldn’t have had a chance to sleep with Chloe the copy girl in 2017 because Chloe wouldn’t work at the copy place — in all likelihood, the copy place wouldn’t even exist. “Copy places” aren’t as ubiquitous in 2017 as they were in the ’90s.

11. Joey wouldn’t have been conned by the encyclopedia salesman in “The One With The Cuffs”

In this episode, Joey spends what little money he does have on an encyclopedia — but just one book in the volume, “V.” Nowadays, even someone as dim as Joey would know that everything he needed to know about the Vietnam War, volcanoes, and everything else that starts with the letter “V” would be easily accessible on Google.

From Riding a Stripper Pole on TV at 9-Years-Old to Becoming a Pregnant Cosmetics Mogul: Kylie Jenner’s Rise to Fame

From Riding a Stripper Pole on TV at 9-Years-Old to Becoming a Pregnant Cosmetics Mogul: Kylie Jenner’s Rise to Fame

by Patrick Gomez @

Kylie Jenner is now the head of a cosmetics empire and pregnant with her first child, but the 20-year-old made her first big splash on reality TV while dancing on a stripper pole when she was just 9.

“The watercooler chatter from the first episode was all about Kylie jumping on a stripper pole,” KarJenner matriarch Kris Jenner recalled of her youngest daughter to The Hollywood Reporter in August. “Kim had one installed in my bedroom and our friend Robin Antin, who is the founder of The Pussycat Dolls, was just messing around, and Kylie hops up there, twirls around a couple times, and it became this thing … When I look back on that, I belly laugh.”

But growing up on camera wasn’t always a laughing matter for Kylie.

“I started filming Keeping Up with the Kardashians when I was 9-years-old. I really don’t know what it’s like to not have everyone know who I am. I don’t know what it’s like to live a normal life, where people just don’t know who you are, to get out of the car and not have everyone stare at you,” she said in August on her KUWTK spinoff Life of Kylie. “I feel like when you grow up on camera, people think that they know you because you’re on social media so much and you’re on reality TV.”

“I had to get home-schooled, not really because I wanted to but because I missed so much school because I was working,” she continued. “It’s hard to feel normal.”

RELATED VIDEO: Kylie Jenner’s Changing Look

But, along with her older sister Kendall, 21, and half siblings, Rob, 30, Khloé, 33, Kim, 36, and Kourtney Kardashian, 38, Kylie learned to embrace the spotlight at a young age.

“Kylie and I did a magazine signing for Seventeen, and it was at some store at The Grove and we had a crazy line around the corner. The store owner came up to us and said, ‘Justin Bieber was here a week ago and didn’t get this response,’ ” Kendall has said.

As Kylie entered her teens, she became increasingly involved in KUWTK and she and Kendall began to make “Jenner” as popular a last name as “Kardashian.”

In 2011 Kylie and Kendall were featured in Seventeen magazine’s Style Stars of the Year. The following year they walked the red carpet and interviewed talent at Hollywood premieres including one for The Hunger Games and guest-starred alongside Kris on an episode of America’s Next Top Model.

The sisters launched clothing, jewelry, handbag and shoe collections together but as time went on Kendall found success as a model and Kylie started on solo projects revolving around her love of cosmetics.

In 2015 Kylie, then 17, revealed Kris “cut me off financially three years ago, so I pay for everything.” At the time a source explained to PEOPLE that Kylie still lived at home with “a refrigerator full of food and all the luxuries that come with Mom but unless it was a gift, if she wanted a new Chanel bag, Kylie was the one paying for it.”

“I’m so proud of Kylie because I love her self-security at a young age,” Khloé told PEOPLE of her sister’s confidence in 2016. But Kylie made international headlines in 2015 when she revealed she’d gotten lip injections and admitted one of the reasons for the procedure was, “I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”

The injections inspired a controversial social media challenge but proved to be the perfect media firestorm to help launch her self-titled lip kits, which debuted in November 2015 and has helped her Kylie Cosmetics brand already rake in a reported $420 million.

“I had the opportunity to make like the coolest makeup line that I’ve always dreamed of,” Kylie said on her reality show. “It’s really my only passion. I learned a lot though and just have experienced things that people my age do not even know how to handle.”

RELATED VIDEO: Want Lips Like Kylie Jenner? The Star Reveals Her Top Beauty Rules to Live By!

But with major success comes media scrutiny and Kylie has found herself in the center of controversy more than once in her decade in Hollywood.

She was photographed along with her sisters Kim and Kendall texting during what was intended to be a moment of silence for Michael Brown at the 2014 Music Video Awards. The following year was accused of wearing blackface in a photo shoot she posted photos from online. (“This is a black light and neon lights people lets all calm down,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.) And a few months later she was criticized for “appropriating” black culture by wearing cornrows.

Her love life has also been the subject of much discussion among her a fans and the media – from her adorable photos with Cody Simpson when she was 14, to the rumors of dating Justin Bieber and her on-and-off relationship with Tyga (she was 17 and the rapper was 24 when they started posting photos of each other on social media) — but the reality star, who has shared so much of her life on social media, has notoriously remained quiet about her boyfriends.

“When you involve the whole world, everyone has an opinion,” she’s said. “It’s not the healthiest. That part of your life should remain sacred.”

And she’s shown signs of wanting to shy away from the cameras as she enters her 20s and begins looking at life as a mom to her daughter with rapper Travis Scott.

“I feel like this fame thing is going to come to an end sooner than we think,” she said on Life of Kylie, which was hugely successful for E! but has yet to be officially renewed for a second season. “I’m getting the bug again, where I just want to run away.”

And while her sisters Kim and Kourtney blanket their social media with photos of their children, Kylie’s fans may not be treated to the same access once she welcomes her daughter, which will happen in February, according to a source.

“Once I have a kid I’m not going to be on Instagram,” Kylie told Allure in 2016. “You know, I’ll probably delete my Instagram and just … I don’t know, live life.”
